About Us
Serving the Blind Since 1973
For more than five decades, Valley Center for the Blind has been a cornerstone of support, empowerment, and opportunity for people who are blind or have low vision throughout California’s Central Valley. What began in 1973 as a small volunteer-led effort to provide social and recreational activities has grown into a comprehensive organization dedicated to independence, skillbuilding, and meaningful employment.
Today, VCB offers a wide range of classes, training programs, and community resources designed to help individuals build confidence, master new skills, and pursue the futures they envision for themselves. Our team is deeply connected to the community we serve — and the majority of our employees are people who are blind or have low vision themselves. Their lived experience, expertise, and leadership shape every program we offer and ensure our services remain relevant, empowering, and grounded in realworld understanding.
We stay at the forefront of emerging technology, tools, and best practices so our programs remain current, engaging, and effective. At VCB, we believe every person — regardless of vision or disability — has the potential to achieve their goals with the right instruction, encouragement, and opportunities.
Losing sight does not mean losing independence, purpose, or hope. We’re here to walk alongside each individual as they discover what’s possible and build a life filled with capability, confidence, and connection.

Our Mission
We support, train and employ people who are low vision or blind.
What We Do
At Valley Center for the Blind, we empower people who are blind or have low vision to build confidence, independence, and meaningful connections—while also helping businesses create more inclusive, accessible workplaces. Our work spans three core areas that support both individuals and the broader community.
Essential Skills Services
We provide training that helps individuals navigate daily life with confidence. From orientation and mobility to assistive technology, independent living skills, and vocational preparation, our programs give clients the tools they need to thrive at home, at work, and in the community. Each service is tailored to the individual, meeting them where they are and helping them move toward their personal goals.
Work Readiness
Our Work Readiness program helps individuals explore their career interests, identify their strengths, and chart a clear path toward meaningful employment. We guide clients through every stage of the journey—from discovering their employment goals to building résumés, practicing interview skills, and learning workplace expectations. Once employed, we continue offering support to ensure longterm success, job retention, and opportunities for advancement. This program empowers clients to step confidently into the workforce and build sustainable, fulfilling careers.
Inclusion, Enrichment, and Connection Services
This combined program focuses on the whole person—supporting emotional wellbeing, building community, and fostering a sense of belonging. We offer counseling, peer mentorship, social activities, creative workshops, and group events that help clients connect with others who understand their experiences. These services reduce isolation, build confidence, and create opportunities for joy, friendship, and personal growth. Whether someone is adjusting to recent vision loss or seeking a vibrant community, this program provides the support and connection they need.
Business Support
VCB also works directly with businesses to strengthen accessibility across the Central Valley. We assist employers with hiring, training, and supporting employees with vision loss, and we offer consulting services that improve workplace accessibility, reduce barriers, and expand opportunities. These partnerships create pathways to employment while helping businesses tap into a skilled, motivated talent pool.
