The Independent Living Skills (ILS) program equips individuals who are blind or visually impaired with practical techniques to maintain confidence, autonomy, and safety in their daily lives. Instruction is provided oneonone or in a group setting, either at the center or through inhome training when appropriate, ensuring that each participant receives personalized support tailored to their environment and goals.

Through this program, participants build essential skills in areas such as:

  • Adaptive Cooking: Safe food preparation, handling hot and cold items, and nutrition techniques
  • Handwriting: Strategies for writing clearly and independently
  • Money and Clothing Identification: Methods for organizing and identifying personal items
  • Labeling and Marking: Practical systems for managing household and personal belongings
  • Household Organization & Sound Identification: Techniques for maintaining order and using auditory cues effectively
  • Communication & Social Skills Adjustment: Tools for confident interaction and selfadvocacy
  • Personal Care & Hygiene: Approaches for safe, independent daily routines
  • Home Maintenance & Safety: Skills for navigating and managing the home environment
  • Cleaning & Laundry: Adaptive methods for maintaining a clean and functional living space
  • Shopping: Strategies for planning, organizing, and completing shopping tasks
  • Basic Mobility Techniques & Transportation: Foundational skills for safe movement and accessing transportation options

The ILS program provides a supportive, structured pathway for participants to strengthen their independence and enhance their quality of life. Each skill area is taught with care, adaptability, and a focus on empowering individuals to thrive in their daily routines.
