Braille Learners who are blind or have low vision are invited to participate in the second Central California Braille Challenge in Fresno on March 22nd. This is a great opportunity for students in grades 1-12 across the Central Valley to show off their Braille skills and possibly qualify for nationals. Breakfast and lunch (at noon) will be provided. People who are not participating in the Braille Challenge contests are also welcome to attend our resource fair. We’ll have resource tables, panels, presentations, and a door prize! We hope you can join us to celebrate braille and to learn more about the opportunities available to students who are blind or have low vision.
The levels for the Braille Challenge are:
- Apprentice: Grade 1 & 2 (contracted or uncontracted)
- Freshman: Grade 3 & 4
- Sophomore: Grade 5 & 6
- Junior Varsity: Grade 7–9
- Varsity Grade: 10–12
- Rookie: Grades 3-12 students learning Braille below their grade level

Students are encouraged to bring their manual Braille Writer (Perkins). We also encourage Sophomore, JV, and Varsity Level students to bring their own digital player (VictorReader Stream or Book Port Plus) and compatible headphones/earbuds for the Speed and Accuracy Tests. For students who do not have these items, we can provide these items for students to borrow.
