Students Conquering Obstacles for the Realization of Employment, (S.C.O.R.E.) is a program developed by Valley Center for the Blind to provide students aged 14-24 with the opportunity to build key skills in order to work towards their goals of gaining meaningful employment. Valley Center for the Blind hosts monthly workshops and an annual summer program to accomplish the following 4 goals:
- To prepare and assist the student in transitioning to College or Employment
- To learn how to successfully advocate for their needs either at school or work
- To confidently socialize with their peers and other members of the community
- To expand skills in ILS, Braille, A/T and O&M
“(During S.C.O.R.E.) I learned about new technology, I learned the new code for braille and how to travel by myself on a city bus. I learned to be independent in public. Before this program I always stayed at home. Now I know if I want to be independent I know I should go out in the public. It was very great and cool to meet new people, make friends and learn more about ADA. This made me know I can protect myself because of my disability and helped me to be braver.”

This program aims to provide transitional aged youth with necessary skills to perform highly in education and employment. During the 2016 summer program, our four week course showed the following results:
- 25% increase in independent travel confidence
- 21% increase in Braille knowledge
- 14% increase in overall independence confidence
Students participate in a variety of activities including advocacy role plays, independent travel by public transportation, effective navigation of public spaces, and project completion.
